An illustrated talk by Carol Barrett

13 January 2014

“Wildlife Artist in Africa”, by Carol Barrett

The SOC are delighted to announce details of an illustrated talk by the highly respected wildlife artist, Carol Barrett.

The evening will offer an insight into how Carol goes about gathering first-hand experience of her chosen subjects in Botswana, Kenya and Namibia, before touching on her most recent research in Tanzania’s Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park (where many of the paintings for ‘Under an African Sky’ were inspired).

Carol will explain in more detail how she collates her reference material and why it is so vitally important to her that she is able to study and learn as much as possible about the wildlife in its natural habitat. Having the opportunity to listen to local guides and to go out in the bush with these experts over long periods of time, she believes, gives her the best chance to capture the true essence of her subject.

Being a committed conservationist, Carol will also touch on her role as the Artist in Residence at The Cheetah Conservation Fund in Namibia and tell us more about her involvement with The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya, including her fascination and passion for elephants!

There will be personal stories of memorable encounters in the Okavango and other favourite haunts, which has meant she has all but used up her ‘nine lives’.

To book a place on this event and hear of the inspirations and experiences which have formed the basis of Carol’s exhibition at Waterston House (which runs from the 22nd February until the 2nd April 2014), then please contact us as detailed below.
