Evening talks programme

At each meeting, an invited speaker gives an illustrated talk on their chosen subject lasting approximately an hour, usually with a break for tea/coffee and biscuits. The talks are predominantly about birds but other flora and fauna are often included, together with some spectacular scenery. The talks are designed to be enjoyed by people with any level of interest in birds and are suitable for most age groups. There is no charge for entry or refreshments although donations are always welcome.

On the following Tuesdays at 7.30pm:

08 Nov 2016
Gordon Yates – Great Northern Diver: In search of Himbrimi

Gordon tells us more about his three visits to Iceland to find and film Himbrimi (the Icelandic name for the Great Northern Diver) and the birds, flowers and spectacular scenery there.

In 1972 Gordon started making wildlife films and every year since he’s managed to produce a one hour film. His films cover his local patch the Pennines as well as Islay, a place very dear to his heart. Overseas destinations include the Seychelles, Iceland, Greenland, Alaska and Spitzbergen. He loves the high Arctic and even his life and death encounter with a Polar Bear while camping in Spitzbergen in 1997 has not put him off wanting to go again!

Gordon was delighted to be made an Honorary Life member of three local wildlife groups in acknowledgement for his contribution to Wildlife Conservation through his films. He has won several awards in still photography competitions with BBC, RSPB, Scottish Wildlife and SOC using his old Pentax equipment. He is now the proud owner of a Canon EOS 7D digital still camera and a Canon XM2 digital camcorder.
