Where did you hear about this event?

This series of four walks offer a chance to develop and enhance bird identification skills in a variety of habitats and are suitable for absolute beginners and improvers.  The walks will be relaxed and informal with discussion and questions encouraged and will aim to provide an enjoyable introduction to birds and birdwatching. Numbers are limited to eight so groups won’t be too large or intimidating.

Weekend course (Block of 4 walks, £80 / £68 SOC members)

Thursday 25 August - Aberlady/Kilspindie (10am - 12noon)

Thursday 1 September - Pencaitland railway walk (8am - 11am)

Thursday 8 September - Aberlady Bay (9am - 12noon)

Thursday 15 September - Musselburgh (9am - 12noon)

The walks will be led by our friendly expert, Scott Paterson, who has many years' experience as trainer in the field of bird identification skills. The pace of the walks, which last around 2-3 hours, is fairly relaxed and the ambience is informal, with discussion and questions encouraged. Numbers on each walk are limited in order to maximise individual learning. The aim is to provide an enjoyable introduction to birds, bird identification and bird watching.

Please ensure that you come prepared for all weathers and have warm, waterproof clothing.  You will also need sturdy walking boots or shoes, or Wellingtons, although we will not be doing any serious hiking, but will be walking on paths which may be rough and/or muddy. If you have binoculars, please bring them. Otherwise, we can arrange a loan pair, just let us know at the time of booking.

Low carbon birding
We aim to choose locations that can be reached by public transport. Full directions to the meeting point for the walks, including bus and train information, are provided by email a few days in advance of each outing.

COVID-19 precautions
In order to keep everyone safe, our walks will be run in accordance with any Scottish Government guidelines in place at the time. Each walk will have a maximum of nine people (including the leader), and you may wish to wear a face covering (optional) when unable to maintain social distancing. Any loaned binoculars will be sanitised beforehand. We would urge participants to do a Lateral Flow Test on the morning of the walk, before attending, if possible. Please do not attend if you (or anyone in your household) have any Covid-like symptoms.

Data Protection
Any personal details you provide when booking will be stored securely by the SOC and shared only with the walks organiser, Scott Paterson, for the purpose of administering your participation on the course.

Cancellations policy
SOC reserves the right to cancel or postpone any of its scheduled guided walks due to unforeseen circumstances or insufficient bookings. Where participants are unable to join a re-scheduled walk, a full refund will be given. In the event that a participant cancels their booking, we will do our best to fill the place in order to be able to issue a full refund (minus a cancellation fee of £1.50).
