Join our SOC x MCS beach clean to help stop harmful litter from reaching the ocean and to assist in collecting vital data that MCS can use to bring about positive change for our seas
Join SOC and Marine Conservation Society (MCS) in Musselburgh for a beach clean and litter survey, delivered as part of MCS’s Scottish Seas Roadshow.
As part of this citizen science survey, we’ll be collecting rubbish and recording the litter we find along a 100m stretch of beach. The survey lasts one hour and every lolly stick, lost toy and piece of plastic we find will be recorded before the litter is recycled where possible and the remainder carefully disposed of. No experience is required, and a health and safety briefing will be carried out before we begin the survey. Please allow about an hour and a half from start to finish of the event.

All welcome
All are welcome to attend. However, children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or carer. 16/17 year olds are welcome to attend as long as signed, written parental/carer consent is provided ahead of the event - please contact Katie Berry at mail@the-soc.org.uk to book.
Meeting place:
We will meet at Fisherrow Harbour (Musselburgh Harbour) on New Street, Musselburgh, EH21 6DH. Look out for the MCS and SOC feather flags denoting our location.
Public toilets are located at Fisherrow Harbour. There is also free car parking available at the Harbour. If coming by public transport, there are regular buses from Edinburgh stopping at Fisherrow. The nearest train station (Musselburgh) is around a twenty-minute walk to the beach.
What to bring:
We’d recommend you pack a few essentials like sunscreen, waterproofs, hand sanitiser and perhaps some snacks and a drink. If you have a pair of gardening gloves, you’d be happy to bring along, please do. This will help MCS’ equipment supplies stretch further.
What to wear:
Please dress appropriately for the (Scottish!) weather. On top of gloves (if you have them), sturdy shoes are encouraged for protection too.
