Exhibition by Darren Woodhead
The SOC is delighted to welcome acclaimed artist Darren Woodhead back to the Gallery for his much-anticipated winter solo exhibition. Known for his mastery of watercolour, Darren presents a deeply personal collection of new paintings, many of which are inspired by his recent move (in 2024) to the East Lothian countryside.
Strongly influenced by a desire to immerse himself in his new environment, Darren describes how he has 'become connected and entwined in fresh surroundings', particularly his garden and local woodland. The engagement with his locality has also revealed a fascination with the shifting light, changing weather, and the cyclic rhythm of the seasons. These themes have become a source of inspiration, bringing new ideas and techniques into his work.
'How strong light can be yet how delicate the hand can move across the page to show this. The mark made is just a variation of pressure applied whilst holding a colour-laden brush; simple, yes; but watercolour is so much more.'
Always painting outside in the environment, Darren’s practice is rooted in connection and observation. Each painting documents his evolving relationship with his environment and the dialogue between artist, subject, and medium.
The exhibition presents a year-long journey; paintings from East Lothian alongside ventures into other parts of Scotland, each revealing Darren’s ongoing fascination with the natural world and the expressive possibilities of watercolour.
To accompany the exhibition Darren will be giving a talk about his work on show and demonstrate some of his renowned watercolour techniques at SOC headquarters on 7th December (3-5pm). This event is free to attend, and no booking is required.
The exhibition can be seen in the gallery at SOC headquarters, Waterston House, Aberlady EH32 0PY. Darren's work will also be available to view online once the exhibition has opened.
