Join the SOC this festive season to celebrate the beauty and drama of winter in the natural world.

The darkest time of the year brings a season of extremes. Landscapes are transformed by frost, snow and ice, suspended in a deep winter’s sleep. Yet beneath this apparent stillness, life continues. Harsh weather and low temperatures test the resilience of wildlife, as animals battle the cold and search for food.

This exhibition brings together the work of 11 artists who explore the contrasting faces of winter: its quiet beauty, wild drama and the remarkable resilience of the wildlife that calls it home. Scenes of high mountain peaks and turbulent seas sit alongside expanses of winter tundra spread bare in muted, earthy tones. Glimpse wild mountain hare and silent owls gliding over snowy hunting grounds. Winter birds perch in the branches of bare trees, silhouetted against clear, icy skies, whilst reindeer forage for lichens and grasses.

The exhibiting artists include Emily Ingrey-Counter, Laura Gressani, Paul Henery, Jane Smith, John Threlfall, Jonathan Sainsbury, Esther Tyson, Liz Myhill, Nik Pollard, Maria Simonova and Helen Wyllie. Together, they present a wide range of styles and mediums, including oil, watercolour, screenprint, etching, monoprint, pastel and drawing.

Alongside the artwork, willow weaver Katie Warner has created a selection of festive decorations and accessories, bringing a touch of winter flora into the gallery.

We hope you’ll find plenty to enjoy in this celebration of winter, its wildlife and landscapes, and we look forward to welcoming you to our final exhibition of 2026.
